Real-time web searches are now possible with ChatGPT.
Today, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT is once again capable of searching the internet for up-to-date information. It provides responses that are sourced straight from “current and authoritative” sources. Currently available only to customers with Plus and Enterprise subscriptions, the function is named Browse with Bing, but the firm promises to make it available to “all users soon.”
Microsoft Bing Chat on Windows may already retrieve live information from the web, Google’s Bard in Chrome and other browsers, and third-party chatgpt browser plugins. Similar to what ChatGPT’s Browse with Bing feature does currently, both provide links while searching. At Meta Connect, Meta recently revealed that the Meta AI Assistant it is integrating with WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger would also leverage Bing to deliver real-time online results.
To get ChatGPT to search the web for you, there is a slight learning curve. The business offers browser version instructions, but I was unable to locate any similar information for the iOS app. Still, I worked it out. It’s three dots menu > Settings > New Features > Browse with Bing if you have a membership. Next, select GPT-4, “Browse with Bing,” and open a new chat window. Then, results from up-to-date websites should appear in your searches.
Although a little slow, it functions. Additionally, you can click the website link to compare the responses it provides when it answers a question for you. I now know that AC/DC may be working on a new album, according to MediaMass, a website I’ve never heard of! Because AI bots have a propensity to deceive, being able to verify their claims with their sources is a big improvement. Not only does this allow you to be sure they are telling the truth, but it’s also wonderful to give credit where credit is due.
In late June, OpenAI included internet chatgpt browsing within the ChatGPT iOS app, but it was immediately removed. Users discovered that by providing a URL straight to the chatbot, they could entice it to show them otherwise paywalled content. Since then, websites can exclude themselves from ChatGPT’s study by updating their Robots.txt file to prohibit it. This is because OpenAI’s automated crawler, which provides data to the model underlying ChatGPT, has started identifying itself with a user agent.

- Click on ‘Profile & Settings’
- Select ‘Beta features’
- Toggle on ‘Browse with Bing’
