The various 3DP processes — including stereolithography (SL), selective laser sintering (SLS) and direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) – work with plastic, ceramic or plaster powder, and some use a combination of metal and plastic to produce more durable parts.

Many printing services allow customers to choose from a wide range of materials, and the cost varies according to the complexity of the design and the resolution needed. The service can also offer options for finishing and post-processing the print, which will add to the overall cost. It offers a way to create unique products that add value for customers, and it can be a key strategy for establishing long-term relationships with consumers. To take advantage of this trend, however, companies must have a clear workflow for producing, tracking and delivering customised products.

In conventional manufacturing, it often takes weeks or even months to receive a physical prototype. 3D printing, however, can dramatically accelerate the prototyping process. This helps businesses test and improve designs quickly, which enables them to bring their products to market much more rapidly.

Using 3D printers also saves time and money by eliminating the need for costly molds, which are typically used for injection molding or machining processes. The technology is also quicker to set up and use, which means less down time for a business when production equipment breaks down.

As additive manufacturing technologies have evolved, they have become more effective and accurate. Additionally, many 3D printing processes eliminate part tooling, which cuts costs for small-volume production runs. For instance, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) builds parts faster than Powder Bed Fusion (SLA or HP Multi Jet Fusion) technologies due to its simpler design and nozzle process. Additionally, choosing a design that features self-supporting angles can further reduce the build time of your parts.

Traditional subtractive processes, like cutting, drilling, and shaping raw materials, can generate a lot of production waste. 3D printing, on the other hand, is an additive process that builds up layer by layer, resulting in less material waste. Some studies suggest that 3D printing produces 70% to 90% less scrap compared to subtractive manufacturing.

In addition, 3D printing can dramatically speed up the prototyping process. For example, a hospital research lab used 3D printing to rapidly prototype new devices and cut down development time from weeks to days.

The sustainability potential of this emerging technology is profound. By reducing waste, enabling local production, and speeding up the design-to-prototype process, 3D printing is transforming manufacturing into an industry that is more responsible toward the environment. With further research and development, this trend can have a long-term impact on the way we produce goods, and how our industry treats our planet.
